So desu ne
Video installation , Karin Hansson 1995
25 old TV monitors piled on each other, connected to video players; showing portraits of people talking: The speech is extracted from sentences, all the words in Japanese that have no direct meaning. But words of great importance, since they express what for example europeans say by facial expressions. Words and sounds used to place emphasis and to show that the contact is not broken. The sounds make no meaning outside their original context. And altogether the different voices from the monitors creates a surreal groaning, comical but also enerving.
